Brolton Group constructs state-of-the-art weathered steel facade on the Fontana Drive Bridge

System Benefits

  • 50 metres facade length
  • 36 tonnes steel required

Brolton Group was awarded the contract for the fabrication and installation of the weathered steel façade for the Fontana Drive bridge in The Gables, an estate in Sydney's Hills Shire, by Christie Civil.

The bridge facade features structural steel ribbons and is a striking feature within the estate, crossing over the beautiful riparian corridor and connecting the estate's residents to Santa Sophia Catholic College, lake and future town centre.

The steel ribbons required a variety of steel thicknesses, 20mm, 16mm and 12mm of special rolled Bluescope WR350 weathered steel. It was a complicated design with tight scheduling. Aside from the complex and intricate design of the structure, it came with the added complication of design constraints, having a maximum of 8mm tolerance over a length of 50 metres. To ensure the success of the project, we conducted test runs; we surveyed our workshop floor and built a prototype in-house for testing purposes.

The bridge is due for opening in mid-2022 and is a significant milestone in the development of The Gables.
